Background screening reports vary depending on the employer and the role you’re applying for. Most include a check for criminal records, verification of past employment and education, and sometimes a review of professional licenses and driving records. Drug testing may also be required, depending on the position.

Most background checks are completed in 48 hours or less, though some may take longer if records need to be retrieved from courts or if past employers and schools take time to respond.

Here’s the great news.  We know your days are most likely very busy. After completing a background check, you’ll be emailed a link to view the progress of your report.  In other words, we’ll save you a ton of time and bring the status updates to your inbox as they are completed.

Hiring decisions depend on the employer, the nature of the job, and company policies. Many employers take a case-by-case approach, considering the type of offense, when it occurred, and how it relates to the position.

Before your background check starts, you’ll need to sign a consent form. Employers may ask for personal details such as your current address, date of birth, and Social Security number. You may also be asked for information on your education and employment history.

Provide as much accurate information as possible. If something doesn’t match exactly, the employer will compare your information with official records.

If any findings affect a hiring decision, the employer must notify you before taking action. You’ll have the opportunity to review and dispute any incorrect information within the time frame allowed by law.

No, your background check results are private and won’t be shared with other employers unless you provide written permission.

If an expunged record has been properly processed by the court, it should not appear in your background report.

No, records from juvenile court are not included in background screening reports.

Definitions

The FCRA is a federal law that gives you the right to know what information consumer reporting agencies have about you and to dispute inaccuracies. It also regulates how and when your consumer report can be accessed. For more information, visit www.ftc.gov.

The FACT Act, an amendment to the FCRA, allows consumers to access a free copy of their credit report each year and enhances protections against identity theft.

A consumer report includes information about a person’s background, such as credit history, employment records, and criminal history, that may be used in hiring, credit, or housing decisions.

A full file disclosure is a request by an individual to see all the information a consumer reporting agency has on them. While CIChecked does not maintain ongoing files on individuals, we provide background screening reports to employers upon request.
