This role will work closely with the President and other senior leadership to help redefine our sales approach and go-to-market strategy and then shepherd those initiatives from concept through cross-functional alignment, approval, early execution, launch, and handoff.

This role ranges from $125,000 to $175,000 annually, plus commissions plus bonuses.
Role Overview
The Vice President of Business Development is a senior executive responsible for driving revenue growth, expanding strategic market presence, and building high-value client relationships within the background screening industry. This leader will own and execute a comprehensive business development strategy, leveraging deep industry expertise to penetrate new markets and grow existing accounts. The VP will directly oversee and direct a cross-functional team comprising Account Executives, Marketing, and Manager Strategic Alliances managing functions essential to sales force effectiveness and productivity - aligning these functions toward cohesive, aggressive, and sustainable growth objectives.
The VP will serve as the quarterback for the sales team and the Company's growth initiatives, while simultaneously aligning stakeholders across Client Solutions, Operations, Finance, Human Resources, and other teams to turn high-potential ideas into scalable, revenue-generating businesses. Success in this role requires exceptional communication, sound judgment, strong prioritization, and the ability to influence stakeholders in a matrixed environment.
The VP is responsible for the overall productivity and effectiveness of the sales organization. The VP fosters close working relationships with the President to ensure the organization’s efficient operation and success.
Core Responsibilities.
Strategic Leadership & Revenue Growth
- Designs, implements, and manages sales forecasting, planning, and budgeting processes. Establishes high levels of quality, accuracy, and process consistency in planning, forecasting, and budgeting approaches used by the sales and customer success organizations. Ensures efforts are appropriately integrated with other planning processes (e.g. Financial forecasting).
- Develops and executes a multi-year business development strategy aligned with company revenue and market share targets.
- Owns the full sales cycle from lead generation through contract execution for enterprise-level and strategic accounts.
- Provides leadership to the sales team, and counsel to the President, in implementing objectives that appropriately reflect the company's business goals.
- Identifies, prioritizes, and closes new business opportunities and strategic partnerships across key segments; supports post-deal enablement to ensure successful activation and growth.
- Sets, monitors, and achieves aggressive quarterly and annual revenue targets; reports results to the Executive Team.
- Implement data-driven pipeline management processes using CRM tools to ensure forecast accuracy.
Team Management & Development
- Accountable for the timely assignment and completion of all sales organization objectives.
- Recruit, mentor, and develop high-performing Account Executives, Marketing personnel, Manager Strategic Alliances, and other roles that fall under Business Development.
- Responsible for the optimal deployment of sales personnel. Makes recommendations for changing sales roles, coverage models, or team configurations to maximize sales productivity. Leads a change management process to build organizational understanding of proposed changes, establish support from key leadership stakeholders, and effectively implement new deployment and job models.
- Works closely with sales leadership to define the optimal performance measurements and performance management programs required to ensure sales and client success organization success. Aligns reporting, training, and incentive programs with these performance management priorities.
- Ensures sales reports, dashboards, and other internal intelligence are provided to leadership. Develop new reporting tools as needed. Coordinates with sales and client services leadership and other stakeholders to lead efficient and accurate sales force reporting initiatives.
- As a thought leader, recommend and develop new strategies, KPIs and programs to enable the success of sales and client services.
- Provide regular performance coaching, feedback, and career development guidance.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the business development organization.
- Conduct weekly pipeline reviews and one-on-ones; identify skill gaps and implement training initiatives.
Client & Partner Relationships
- Serve as executive sponsor for key accounts, ensuring exceptional service delivery and long-term relationship health.
- Partner with the Manager Strategic Alliances to identify, negotiate, and activate partnerships and client services process improvement. Facilitate successful implementation of new programs through the sales and client services organizations by ensuring a well-defined, efficient process is in place for launch. Foster an organization of continuous process improvement.
- Participate in and represent the company at industry conferences, trade associations (NAPBS/PBSA), and client executive briefings.
- Lead contract negotiations for major accounts, ensuring favorable terms that align with business objectives.
Marketing & Brand Alignment
- Collaborate with the Marketing Communications Coordinator to develop impactful go-to-market materials, thought leadership content, and digital demand generation campaigns.
- Align messaging and positioning with regulatory compliance updates (FCRA, EEOC, ban-the-box legislation) to reinforce credibility and trust.
- Guide the development of proposals, RFP responses, and client presentations that reflect the company's value proposition.
Market Intelligence & Product Feedback
- Monitor competitive landscape including other background screening providers; communicate competitive insights to leadership and product teams.
- Serve as the voice of the customer internally, feeding market intelligence into product roadmap discussions.
- Stay current on industry regulations, compliance trends, and emerging technologies (AI-driven screening, continuous monitoring, etc.)
Direct Reports
The VP of Business Development will manage and provide strategic direction to the following roles:
- Account Executives: Front-line sales professionals responsible for prospecting, pipeline development, and closing new business.
- Marketing Communications Coordinator: Supports brand positioning, content strategy, lead generation campaigns, and sales enablement materials.
- Manager Strategic Alliances: Leads identification, negotiation, and management of partnership and channel relationships.
- TBD - Account Managers: Relationship managers focused on client retention, satisfaction, upsell, and renewal of existing accounts.
The Right Fit Has...
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Sales, Marketing, or a related field (MBA preferred) or equivalent experience required.
- Minimum 10+ years of progressive business development and sales leadership experience, with 3-5+ years in the background screening, employment verification, or adjacent HR technology industry.
- Demonstrable experience working within, or alongside, executive leadership teams - this role will operate within the executive leadership team and report directly to the President.
- Demonstrated track record of driving growth and building referral and customer pipelines and consistently achieving or exceeding revenue targets.
- Proven experience managing, coaching, and developing high-performing, multifunctional sales and business development teams.
- Deep knowledge of background screening products, services, and industry compliance requirements (FCRA, EEOC, state and local ban-the-box laws).
- Strong executive presence with the ability to engage executive suite stakeholders and negotiate complex enterprise agreements.
- Proficiency with CRM platforms (HubSpot preferred) and sales analytics tools.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
- Active participation in PBSA (Professional Background Screening Association) or related industry organizations.
- Familiarity with adjudication workflows, continuous criminal monitoring, and identity verification services.
- Experience leading RFP responses and government/enterprise procurement processes.
- Strong relationships with the franchising industry preferred.
- As a condition of employment, all employees are subject to, and must pass, a criminal background check for private investigative license by the NYS Department of State pursuant to Article 7 of the General Business Law.
